What is the month of Ramadan and why is it such an important time of the year for Muslims around the world? Explore the deeper lessons of this holy time with Luca Alexander, who will share about their own personal explorations as a queer and trans Muslim UU. They will also speak about Laylat al-Qadr (“The Night of Power”) and how personal revelations, community building, and liberative justice are core takeaways from the celebration of the holy month of Ramadan. To join us online, please email [email protected]. Our guest, Luca Alexander (they, them, their[s]), has lived on Massachusett, Pennecook, and Wampanoag lands for the last 11 years. They are a white, disabled, queer and trans Muslim UU, with a professional background in theology, sex work, and anti-racist gender justice. Luca works within and beyond the American Muslim community on themes related to gender and sexuality as a writer who is passionate about raising the voices of marginalized women and queer individuals. Luca completed a master’s degree in theological studies at Boston University in 2021 and also holds a bachelor’s degree from Tufts University in religion and Middle Eastern studies. They have been invited to speak about Islam, gender, and sexuality at multiple institutions of higher education, such as University of California-Riverside, Columbia University, and Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Luca’s current focuses are sexuality and gender, disability, and non-binary religious voices and spaces. In their free time, Luca sips coffee with non-dairy creamer and sugar, dabbles in various artistic mediums, and writes poetry.
